Dr. Burnett received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York and received the Doctor of Medicine Degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.

She completed a medical internship at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas and served a two-year residency in Ophthalmology at the University-year research and clinical fellowship in Cornea and External Eye Disease followed at Harvard University’s Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, Massachusetts.  She recently received the Certificate in Theology from the Interdenominational Theological Center.

Dr. Burnett specializes in diseases and surgery of the cornea, including corneal transplants.  She also has an extensive practice involving care of cataracts and glaucoma, including intraocular lens implantation, contact lens problems, keratoconus, chronic dry eye and laser surgery.

Dr. Burnett is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and has been elected a Life Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.  She is a member of the Atlanta Medical Association, the Georgia State Medical Association, and the National Medical Association.  She has published articles involving her eye research in national and international scientific journals, and has participated in international volunteer eye care projects.

Dr. Burnett is married to Shelby R. Wilkes, M.D., a vitreoretinal surgeon in private practice in Atlanta, Georgia.  Together they own and operate a nationally certified ambulatory care center for the treatment of surgical eye cases.  She is an active member of Zion Hill Baptist Church, where she helped to structure a rights of passage heritage program for teens.  She is also a member of the Women’s Ministry.  Dr. Burnett is a member of the Atlanta Chapter of the Links, Inc.  She has been featured in articles in Ebony and Jet magazines, and has been a contributing writer for Essence Magazine and the Atlanta Journal Constitution and Atlanta Tribune newspapers.
